Current Playlist

When independence day is at the corner, automatically songs like “Ae mere vatan k logon”, “sandeshe aate hain”, starts to get into your playlist. Similarly as any wedding is nearby, celebratory song start to picture in our mind. This happens with festivals as well. Who hasn’t heard “mere tumhare sabke liye happy Diwali” song on each Diwali. Regarding Holi, it needs no discussion I believe. With this, I want to bring forward my today’s writeups context, and that is your playlist once you have an infant in your life.

Ever since my son was 1 month old, he has been listening to “Nani teri morni Ko” incessantly. As I am an old songs lover, he is used to listening to “Sawan ka mahina”, “Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par” etc since past 8 months. But now I am finding more “age-appropriate” songs for him. And that brings us to the banal, weird yet magical world of hindi rhymes.

From listening to “ek chota hathi khelne gaya, makdi k Jaal mein vo phass gaya”, to “ek bandar ne kholi dukaan, aaye graahak bhi aise mahaan, billi ji aai lekar paise, bandar ji dete ho choohe kaise” and likewise, I now end up humming these weird lyrics in office while working!!! To a person who loves to listen to meaningful songs, humming ek bandar ne kholi dukaan, is neither age-appropriate, nor is it acceptable to me. I realise the situation is critical and needs to be addressed. And with this , I started my quest for good baby songs. These are actually for me, as my son is not getting bothered by the song selection at all.

And I am sure I have hit the bulls eye already. Apart from “Nani teri morni Ko”, another equally but unpopular song to many of us would be “Kabuliwaala”. This song by Balraj Sahni, Usha Kiran and Ranu Mukherjee is such a treat to your ears. It also is very close to a small version of Ramayana in Bengali by the name “Chotoder Ramayan” sung by Hemanta Mukherjee. I highly recommend all, irrespective of being parents or not, to listen to Kabuliwaala. It is such a joyous song. I am very grateful for the first time to my Alexa who introduced this song to me. Below are the links of Kabuliwaala, as well as Chotoder Ramayana, now that I have talked about this masterpiece as well.
